Van Insurance - The Key Issues
The key issues with Van Insurance tend to be related to the required usage of the van and the size of the van being insured.
Usage
There are several types of usage for vans, but generally they tend to be business related. As you can imagine, insurance companies will question why anyone would purchased a van simply for the purpose of 'Social, Domestic & Pleasure Usage' as it would seem to make sense that a much smaller car would be much more economical to run. Generally speaking, most insurance companies would require a commercial vehicle usage to be covered on a van insurance policy, with 'Social, Domestic & Pleasure' usage also included within that.
There are three main types of usage on a Van insurance policy;
- Carriage of own goods (with a restricted radius i.e. local business or unrestricted i.e. work anywhere)
- Carriage of other peoples goods (removals, local haulage etc)
- Fast food delivery and courier use
Weight of Van
There tends to be a split between vehicle under 3.5t and over 3.5t - the vans under 3.5t are usually classified as 'light commercial vehicles'. The heavy vans are often classed in the 'truck' category and this often costs slightly more to insure, usually due to the risks involved with the types of business these vehicles are used for.
