Impounded Car Insurance - we're here for you when you need it!
We announced back in April that we are now offering Impounded Car Insurance. The Sky Insurance Impound policy offers instant online cover, meaning you can recover your vehicle quicker than ever before!
If, by unfortunate circumstance you have had your car impounded, then there’s a few things you’ll need to know before you can go about releasing it. Yes, it’s important to move quickly to keep fees low and to avoid having your car sold / disposed of, but it is equally as important that you have all the required documentation (before you can even attempt to get your car released).
Why would your car be impounded?
There are quite a few varying reasons as to why one’s car may be impounded. We’ve listed some of the common ones:
- Driving whilst the vehicle is declared SORN
- Parking offences
- A vehicle being on the road without valid insurance
- Failure to pay fines
- Failure to tax your vehicle
Where do you go once your car has been impounded?
After your car has been impounded, they will take it to a ‘pound’. You will need to find out which pound it has gone to, before it can be released – you will need to contact the relevant local authority who impounded the vehicle to find out its location. If all else fails, phoning 101 and speaking with the police will help as they should be able to locate your car.
What should you take with you to pick up your car?
You will need valid impounded car insurance in addition to: proof of identity (such as your driving licence), proof of ownership (the V5 registration document), proof of address (such as a utility / council tax bill), and a valid M.O.T.
There are, in some circumstances however, other documentation you will need to bring with you. Check on the government website for information relating to these circumstances.
What should you need to pay?
You will need to settle and pay any storage and removal costs. Act fast – impounded vehicles must pay a storage charge every day they are impounded. Plus, there’s a removal fee which can be dramatically decreased if the vehicle is released within 24 hours.
Ultimately, the crucial thing you need to know is that if the vehicle is not claimed within 7 -14 days of its impounded date, it can legally be disposed of, or sold. So, what’s the moral of the story? Avoid all these pitfalls and act fast!
What is Impounded Car Insurance?
Here at Sky Insruance we’ve designed a policy that covers impounded cars. The minimum policy length you need is 30 days. This insurance policy must also stipulate that it covers impounded vehicles. You will need to take a printed copy of the insurance certificate to prove your insurance meets these requirements, therefore there is no getting out of this one!
We offer this through our specialised impounded car insurance scheme, via our Insure4aDay product. The cover is for 30 days (the time-period required by law) and meets the insurance necessities also required by law to release an impounded vehicle.
