Private Practice for Learner Drivers
From our own research, we found that people who practice driving outside of their driving lessons are more likely to pass their driving test quicker. We believe this is because learners have built up more confidence and are more aware of their surroundings, purely through all those additional hours of driving.
Being able to take out cover to temporarily add a Learner to someone else's car whilst learning is a fairly new concept in insurance. It removes a lot of the old barriers in relation to parent's being concerned about any negative effect on their own insurance, for example: losing their No Claims Discount. With this new type of policy, it is a totally separate 'top up' policy and therefore removes those issues. More and more people are recognising that the more often you practice, the more likely you are to pass your test, just like with any exam in life.

Annual Learner Driver Insurance
We have policies available that are underwritten by excellent insurers such as Aviva. We offer policies that use the most up-to-date Telematics technology, in order to be able to offer very competitive premiums and policy benefits.
The Annual Learner Driver Insurance scheme features include:
- Cover for Provisional Licence or Full Licence holders
- Access to your own Personal Online Dashboard
- Driver tips and alerts
Read our blog article ‘Sky Insurance’s Black Box Insurance Scheme’ for more detailed information. Here is an extract:
"Black Box Insurance (also referred to as Telematics) can simultaneously save you money and improve your driving technique... Sky Insurance offers policies that include a black box being fitted to your car that can monitor your driving and rewards your conscientious driving."
We also offer policies with other insurers. These policies are flexible and in effect, you only pay for what you use. If you take out the policy under a provisional licence, when you pass your driving test, we may be able to either convert the policy over to a full licence holder policy or offer a proportional refund (dependant on the period of cover already used). If we are able to convert the policy over to a full licence holder policy, you may enjoy the added benefit of starting your No Claims Bonus (NCB) period from the inception of the policy. We cannot always offer this, but our advisors will explain the options available to you at the time of your quotation.
There are far more benefits which can be explained over the phone by one of our Learner Driver Insurance specialist team members. Give them a call today to find out more.
Learner Driver Scenarios
There are many situations you may be faced with as a learner driver, whereby Learner Driver Insurance can help. Here are a few of those situations:
- You have got your own car and have just started learning to drive but need insurance.
- You've just bought a car in anticipation of passing your Driving Test and you want to get insurance to cover you whilst practising
- It's two weeks before your driving test and you want to improve on certain skills before the test date, so you decide to borrow your parents car. A short-term learner driver policy will cover you in someone else's car.
- You want to borrow your dad's car but his insurance company won't cover you. Our short term learner 'top-up' insurance will cover you whilst learning in his car - and will not affect his policy or No Claims Bonus.

FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Do I need to have an accompanying driver?
Answer: Yes, whilst you have a provisional licence, you must have an accompanying driver with you at all times.
Question: If I am using someone else's car and have purchased Temporary Learner Driver Insurance and I am involved in an accident, does this affect their No Claims Bonus?
Answer: No, this is a separate add-on policy which does not affect the owner of the car's No Claims Bonus.
Question: Are there any restrictions on the number of hours I can drive for?
Question: Does it cover me whilst taking my driving test?
Answer: Yes, however, cover on some policies vary once you have passed your driving test. If you intend to use the car for your actual driving test, check our website or call us to confirm which is the most suitable type of cover for that purpose, as some policies do not cover driving home from your test, whilst others do.
